Food Styling – Essential for Food Photography
I love creating recipes and styling food for photography as it allows me to combine my love of food with my passion for design and presentation.
Food styling is the essential component of food photography. The role of the food stylist is to present the food in a way that will ensure that the ‘hero’ food is attractive in the finished photograph and meet the needs of the client and art director.
The main difference between how a home cook or chef may present food and what a food stylist does is to carefully and artfully arrange the food. A good stylist also requires the visual flair to be able to translate the perception of taste, aroma and appeal that one gets from an actual dish, to a two-dimensional photograph.
Most good food stylists have culinary training. Many are professional chefs or have a background in the food industry. In addition to knowledge of nutrition and cooking techniques, food stylists must also be resourceful shoppers. As creative professionals, they envision the finished photograph and style the food accordingly.
